Art Blog Berlin: A platform by Heidrun Kaiser for the diversity of the art scene

The DEGEWO Hochhaus Galerie in Berlin is an extraordinary exhibition venue that provides artists with a platform to present their works to a wide audience. Heidrun Kaiser, the new gallerist of this institution, is passionately committed to promoting the art scene in Marzahn-Hellersdorf. Her Kunstblog Berlin documents the diversity of contemporary art and accompanies the numerous exhibitions of the gallery with well-founded articles.

From Painting to Curator: Heidrun Kaiser's Commitment to Art

The management of the DEGEWO Hochhaus Galerie was taken over by Heidrun Kaiser in May 2024. Her own artistic career began after studying mathematics in Dresden, when she dedicated herself intensively to painting and drawing. She is particularly known for her commitment to the group Montagsmaler Biesdorf, which she has led since 2012. Here she shares her knowledge, promotes creative exchange, and creates an inspiring atmosphere for artists.

In her role as a gallerist and art mediator, Kaiser pursues the goal of making art accessible to everyone and focusing on regional artists. Her exhibitions encompass a wide range from abstract and figurative painting to experimental installations.

Art as a Mirror of Society: The Exhibition "Das Fischbild" by Diana Achtzig

An outstanding example of the connection between artistic expression and social reflection is the exhibition “The Fish Picture – Ink Painting on Paper” by Diana Achtzig. From October 2 to December 3, 2024, the DEGEWO Hochhaus Galerie presents a collection of colorful ink paintings that appear playful and humorous at first glance, but upon closer inspection convey profound social critique.

The fish as a motif is well-documented in art history – from Pieter Bruegel's “Big Fish Eat Little Fish” (1556) to Asian ink painting, where it symbolizes adaptability and luck. Diana Achtzig utilizes this iconographic heritage and applies it to modern themes such as competition, social hierarchies, and power structures.

Her brightly colored fish with smiling mouths represent the absurdity of human striving for success. Achtzig herself describes her experiences as a gallerist and entrepreneur as a constant “struggle for survival in the shark tank.” Her works are therefore not only aesthetic artworks but also critical reflections on social mechanisms and the dynamics of social relationships.

The Montagsmaler Biesdorf: Artistic Community and Creative Exchange

In addition to major solo exhibitions, Heidrun Kaiser also focuses on promoting local art initiatives. A remarkable example is the group Montagsmaler Biesdorf, which meets every Monday at the district center to experiment with new techniques and develop their own works.

The group is characterized by its variety of artistic styles and media – from watercolor and acrylic to chalk and ink drawings. Through regular workshops, joint exhibitions, and plein-air painting trips, works are created that reflect the creative energy of Marzahn-Hellersdorf.

A vibrant place for art and culture

The DEGEWO Hochhaus Galerie is much more than an exhibition space – it is a place of dialogue, reflection, and inspiration. Through the commitment of Heidrun Kaiser, exhibitions are created that address social issues, present the diversity of artistic expressions, and provide a platform for artists.
