Study stage design: Studies and career in scenography and costume

What set designers do, what belongs in the portfolio, and what study paths are available

Whether opera stage, theater, or film set: set design and costumes shape how a piece appears. Those who want to work in this field need spatial imagination, craftsmanship, and usually a degree.

What stage designers do

Set designers, often also called scenographers, develop the space in which a play takes place. Together with direction and dramaturgy, they work out a concept, draw designs, build models, and accompany the implementation in the theater workshops until the premiere. They are often also responsible for the costumes, sometimes working with their own costume designers.

In addition to drawing and model building, digital tools are playing an increasingly important role: 3D models and virtual spaces help to visualize designs and coordinate with the team.

The Essentials in Brief

  • Set designers create spaces for theater, opera, film, and exhibitions.
  • Studies are usually full-time at state art colleges, and at some private academies, they can also be part-time.
  • For the application, personal ideas and spatial thinking in the portfolio are important.
  • Many start as assistants at a theater and later work freelance.

Paths to Study

Stage design and costume design can be studied at state art colleges, such as the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee, the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden, or the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München. The study places are limited, admission is through portfolio and entrance examination, and studies are usually full-time.

Those already in the profession can study part-time at some private academies. The article Studying art alongside a career explains the differences between state colleges and private academies. An overview of careers in art is provided by the article Making a career with art.

What belongs in the application portfolio

Many applications fail because of the portfolio. Find out exactly what each university requires. For stage design, your own ideas and spatial thinking are needed, such as:

  • Sketches and designs for a play or an opera
  • Spatial studies and models, in original or as a photo
  • Drawings from nature and works in various techniques
  • Figurines or costume designs

Still lifes, manga drawings, or photorealistic drawings, which are popular on social media, rarely convince instructors. They are looking for imagination and the ability to study. Further tips are provided in the article Application Portfolio for Art Studies: 10 Mistakes You Should Avoid.

Stage design and costume at the Achtzig Kunstakademie Berlin

The Achtzig Kunstakademie Berlin in Biesdorf offers the degree programs Stage Design and Film and Stage Costume as part-time studies, online or in person. According to the academy, the study lasts four years and ends with a diploma from the academy. Topics covered include project drafts, theater practice, presentation and art marketing, as well as virtual spaces. Admission is without a high school diploma through a portfolio, aptitude test, and interview.

Career in theater, film and exhibition

After studying, set designers work at theaters and opera houses, in film and television, or in exhibition and event design. Many start as assistants at a theater to learn about processes, workshops, and networks, and later work freelance for various productions.

The profession requires teamwork, resilience before premieres, and often a willingness to travel. A well-maintained portfolio with photos of completed works is the most important calling card.
