Closeness in a Time of Contactlessness
In the fall of 2020, the Corona pandemic determined everyday life, and contact became the exception. Yet touch and togetherness are among our basic social needs. We want to feel secure, show emotions, and let ourselves go in a relationship. This makes us strong and content. But this very openness scares many: those who approach others emotionally make themselves vulnerable, and vulnerability is quickly seen as a weakness in our society.
The Most Important Points in Brief
- The Bottega Barone Gallery showcased "Woman’s Art Emotions" from October 3 to 31, 2020.
- Diana Achtzig's paintings deal with the need for closeness and the strength of women.
- The focus is on couples in love, including same-sex couples, and women with symbolic animals.
- Two videos provide insight into the exhibition.
The Strength of the Woman
Despite equality, women in relationships often experience powerlessness. "Many women have no interest in power games and wish for a partner who simply supports them. They are not aware of their own power, perhaps because they cannot articulate what they want," says Diana Achtzig. "It's time for women to learn to assert their goals, demand their desires and needs!"
In her paintings, the Berlin artist combines both themes: the need for closeness and female strength. Sometimes subtle, sometimes provocative, sometimes symbolic, the power of women runs through her works. The couple relationship plays a significant role, not only between woman and man: she also paints same-sex couples and confident women with animals, which usually have symbolic meanings.
