Photography and Painting: an Old Interplay
When photography was publicly introduced in 1839, some feared the end of painting. It turned out differently: Painting freed itself from the obligation to accurately depict reality and found new ways, from Impressionism to abstraction. At the same time, many painters used photos as templates.
To this day, both media enrich each other: Painted images quote excerpts, blurriness, and perspectives of the camera, while photographs adopt the composition and lighting mood of painting. This very juxtaposition was made visible in the exhibition at the Achtzig Galerie.
